Charge, Charge, Charge!

This can be a very confusing word because it can be used in so many different ways. These are the most common uses. Check your dictionary for other less common uses.

I was amazed that the hotel charged $7 for a cup of coffee. Anywhere else in the city charges $4.50 at the most.

Some supermarkets charge a fee of 2% if you pay with a credit card.

TO MAKE SURE THAT AN ITEM IS READY TO USE

Make sure that your mobile phone is fully charged otherwise it might go flat when you are in the middle of a conversation.

The fire extinguisher was useless to put out a fire because it had not been charged for over five years.

Modern cars have so much electronic equipment that you must make sure that the car battery is charged all the time.

TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR SOMETHING

TO ACCUSE SOMEONE OF A CRIME

Slobodan Milosevic was charged with crimes against humanity at the International Court in The Hague.

Because the drunk driver had not intended to kill the pedestrian he was charged with manslaughter not murder.

TO RUSH OR ATTACK

The police charged into the crowd with shields and batons.

For some reason the elephant went berserk and charged into the market place and killed several villagers in the northern part of India.
